Welcome to our blog. We are students in the Junior Class at Lake Brunner School. Whaea Pip is our teacher. We are named Moana after the lake and the town we are in. Our school is on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand.

Animal Sounds
We are learning about Sound and Communication this term. Animals make all sorts of different sounds to communicate. Today, we each chose and animal and did an pastel and dye picture of it making its sound. Can you see all the fabulous animals we created?

Maps!
We read the book, 'Chimp and Zee' by Catherine and Laurence Anholt today. The children were interested in the big map in the book, which showed all the locations in the story. So we decided to make our own maps!
Some made treasure maps, some made story maps. Some made maps of where they lived and others made HUMUNGOUS maps!
We learned how maps have North, South, East and West on them.
Some of us also made our maps look old by cutting or tearing the edges, scrunching them up and using a wet teabag to 'paint' them.
Moana is a class of amazing map-makers!

Sandpit Fun
Today we played in the sandpit. We are soon getting a brand new sandpit, so we will have two!
After we played, we wrote descriptions of sand together. This is what we wrote:
Sand is....
brown
squishy
fun
hard when you smack it
crinkly
soft
tiny
filled with tiny stones
creative
dry and wet
cold
warm
real tingly
It falls out of your hands.
You can build stuff with it.
You can make sand balls.
You can break bad houses.
You can make big mountains.
You can build roads.
You can flatten it.
You can get messy with sand!
You can smash stuff with sand.
Sand makes us feel happy!

Autumn Leaves
Today we enjoyed beautiful autumn leaves in Moana.
Find your five most favourite leaves
Fallen down from autumn trees
Pick them up, but do not sneeze -
Or they will fly off in the breeze!
We each collected five leaves we liked. Then we made some mystery maths for them - counting veins, points, marks or other things we noticed, and getting friends to figure out what we had counted.
We made leaf art, did leaf writing and thought of words that described the leaves. (Some pretty awesome sounding out of new words too!)
What do you think of our leaf work?
